San Diego, CA - Maxima rider Todd Potter was the king of the hills at the second stop of the $1 million 2012 Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour on Saturday, mastering the biggest and most challenging course in the history of the sport in front of an enthusiastic Southern California crowd in Glen Helen.

Todd Potter was the master of the 60-foot high step-up that scared half of the field away from the biggest hill jump ever included in a Red Bull X-Fighters course. Potter, hailing from Temecula, California, an hour from Glen Helen, beat Frenchman Thomas Pagès in a thrilling duel of fearless aerial specialists under the blazing heat of Southern California. American Wes Agee also thrived on the hill-filled freeride-influenced track, getting a superb third place in his first-ever competition and winning the Swatch Best Move.

Potter, Pagès and Agee dazzled the afternoon crowd of 15,000 with their breathtaking flips and back flips up what all the riders agreed was the most intimidating step-up jump ever. Many of the favorites, including defending champion Dany Torres of Spain and 2012 championship leader Levi Sherwood of New Zealand, opted to skip the awe-inspiring step-up and paid a heavy price for that with the judges, getting knocked out in early rounds against the bolder riders who were not afraid to tackle the beast. It was a risky leap more than 60 feet up to the top of a cliff – and anyone falling mere inches short of the landing on the rim could end up tumbling straight back down the steep hill.

“It’s a dream come true,” said Potter, who clearly had the crowd on his side throughout the three knock-out rounds with his flashy riding style and charismatic flirtations with the spectators. Potter said the courage paid off for the top-three in Glen Helen and challenged his rivals to learn how to jump on big step-ups if they want to win on tracks like Glen Helen: “I think they need to suck it up and do it, that’s the bottom line. You can’t just circle and hit a ramp and come back and hit another ramp. This takes you out of your element and puts you into the real world of FMX and its roots.”

Results, Glen Helen: 1. Todd Potter (USA), 2. Thomas Pagès (FRA), 3. Wes Agee (USA), 4. Javier Villegas (CHL), 5. Eigo Sato (JAP), 6. Rob Adelberg (AUS), 7. Levi Sherwood (NZL), 8. Dany Torres (ESP), 9. Maikel Melero (ESP), 10. Nick Dunne (USA), 11. Martin Koren (CZE).

Celtic Racing’s Rispoli Claims Second Pole And Race Two Victory To Extend AMA SuperSport West Lead

San Diego, CA – Celtic Racing arrived at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California with James Rispoli leading the AMA SuperSport West Championship and teammate Corey Alexander firmly in the top five of the East Championship despite crashing hard at Road Atlanta in race two. Rispoli guided his #1 Celtic Orient Express Racing Suzuki GSX-R 600 through a dense field of 51 riders to secure pole position; half a second ahead of his closest competitor. Alexander rode the #5 National Guard Fairhills Group Suzuki GSX-R 600 to qualify sixth and proved his mental and physical toughness, overcoming his shoulder injury and a nasty highside as well.

In Saturday’s race one, Rispoli lead early after a great start, but was passed by race winner Dominguez and missed the win by only 0.170 seconds at the flag. James Rispoli and Jake Lewis resumed the close racing seen at Road Atlanta, and extended a gap to the second pack of riders by several seconds. Corey Alexander fought off soreness and pain, and battled in a pack of six riders near the front, taking advantage of small mistakes ahead of him to improve his position through the race. Alexander eventually finished ninth – a great result despite difficult conditions.

Celtic Racing approached Sunday’s race two with the desire to improve on Saturday’s results, and both riders succeeded – James Rispoli rode hard and took his third win of the season ahead of Dominguez, Puerta, and Lewis. This marks back to back double podium’s for Rispoli in addition to the pole position, and cements his SuperSport West lead at 44 points ahead of Meyers. Corey Alexander showed his determination and strength, leading the second pack of riders and finishing seventh, two positions forward of his result on Saturday.

James Rispoli was really happy to report that “Another race win feels great, and we picked up valuable points going to Miller. Qualifying was tough, but the bike felt great and was working good all weekend – great to start from Pole especially at Infineon. I couldn’t get my rhythm going Saturday and had to settle for second place, but we had a race winning machine – hats off to my Celtic Orient Express crew – William, Eric, and Justin. Sunday was awesome, and I had a great battle at the front of the pack with those guys. It was a crazy race with all the red flags, and the tires go off a little each time which made for a slick race. On Sunday I wasn’t going to let anyone lead, especially after the third red flag. We got the bike working great, and I had the bike to win all weekend. I wanted the most laps led and the race win, it was good to give my crew another win. I have to thank Jason Pridmore and Mark Gallardo from the Star Motorcycle School for really working with me and getting me groomed right.”

“During Sunday morning’s warmup my crew got my National Guard Fairhills Group GSX-R 600 feeling better so I decided to give the race a shot. Overall I’m glad we did and I’m happy to come out of this weekend with a decent result under these circumstances. I really have to give a huge thanks to everyone involved for staying behind me and especially my guys Barry, Tim, and Mike. They worked really hard this weekend and I appreciate it tremendously. Many thanks also to Jason Pridmore for his coaching on and off the track, it make a huge difference for me this weekend. We will be back to the front at Miller for sure!” stated Corey Alexander.

Both Celtic Racing Suzuki GSX-R 600′s showcase the best in road racing technology. Product support for both machines comes from: Michael Jordan Motorsports, American Suzuki, Armor Bodies, Chicken Hawk Racing, DesignStar3, Dynojet, FMF Racing, Full Spectrum Power, Hudson Valley Racing, Galfer Brakes, GB Racing, K-Tech Suspension, Maxima Oils, Motion Pro, Pit Bull, Riviera Country Club, Saddlemen, Star Motorcycle School, Vortex Racing, and Zero Gravity.

Jayson never panicked and then drove a flawless stint, passing one car after the next, and then handing over a perfect car to Pierre Kleinubing who challenged for the top spot for most of the race. Pierre said, “The car was great, the handing and brakes were awesome, we just didn’t have the speed on the straights the BMW had!” And “a special thanks to the guys on the team, who have been working their butts off to give us a great”. “This race was dedicated to our team-mate Taylor Hacquard who is recovering from a serious head injury!”

The podium finish places Pierre and Jayson second in the ST driver points lead and Jayson Monticello Motor Club Rookie of the Year Award points lead.

Procon Maxima BMW Continues Its Championship Push in Darwin

San Diego, CA - After spending the summer testing the 2012 S 1000 RR at the fast Phillip Island circuit and claiming 2nd for Round 1, it was time to pack everything up and head 4000 km north to Hidden Valley, Darwin. Shane Kinderis from Alpine Performance and Dave Krsevan from Kroozetune, compiled all the data from Round 1 and worked tirelessly to bring the new bike into the zone Glenn Allerton needed so that he could do what he does best,….WIN.

For those who don’t know, the 2012 S1000 RR possesses a lot of differences from the 2011 model Glenn piloted to a championship win. As the team works through the differences, new strengths are uncovered and each time they get a little closer to the perfect package.

Hidden Valley is so different to Phillip Island in many ways and the data compiled last year doesn’t closely fit the new bike and new control tires. Some of the challenges in this course include slow corners, a long straight and the incessant heat and humidity which has both bike and rider on the verge of expiring. Crew chiefs spend just as much time trying to hydrate the crew as they do the riders allowing everyone to continue to focus.

The weekend schedule is Thursday: Open Practice; Friday: Official Practice; Saturday: Qualify and Sunday: Race. The team put together what they think will suit each rider, Glenn Allerton Superbike, Linden Magee Prostock and sent them out for practice. Straight up both riders post some of not only the fastest times, but also some of the most consistent . Both Shane and Kroozy ( aka Doctor boingo ) breath a sigh of relief, they are in the game.

Over the next couple of days, the team achieves a mixed bag of results. Linden constantly posting the fastest PS times smashing previous lap records only to be taken out by a wayward slower rider. After rebuilding the badly damaged BMW, Linden takes another fall going down to a trail of oil left by another rider resulting in the shutdown of the track for a lengthy cleanup. Glenn was always in the top 3, but we seemed to hit a wall in our progress, while the other teams crept a few more tenths on us.

Glenn qualified in 6th

Linden 2nd PS 11th overall

Race 1 – Glenn didn’t get the best start which allowed Josh and Robbie to get a huge gap after a couple of laps . The Procon Maxima BMW team battle with Team Honda ended up with Glenn splitting the 2 Hondas in a close to-and- fro, managing 4th place as our best result.

Linden got off well slotting into 2nd PS behind the ever improving Nick Waters. 3/4 race distance, while putting a passing move on a Superbike, had a clash of bars bumping his front brake leaver sending him off into the sand at turn 1 . Linden recovered to take 3rd.

Race 2 – The team had decided to take a new direction with some of their settings and it paid huge dividends. Glenn drove off the 2nd row of the grid better than I’ve seen him start on the Beemer and shoved it into 2nd into the 1st turn. The 2 Honda’s threw everything at him which allowed Josh to again put his head down and gap the field on the out lap by a huge margin. 2nd lap onto the straight saw GA pulling a good gap on the chasing pack and reeling in the runaway Josh Waters.

Glenn’s next lap was a full half second quicker than he had been all weekend and more importantly faster than Josh. Just when the team thought they were back, Glenn had his charge hauled by a red flag. It was back into the pits and all focus was on doing it all again. Another ripper of a start from the 2nd row, true to form Josh drew away with Glenn a lot closer in pursuit . It wasn’t going to be easy again with the shiny white BMW and 2 Red pests nipping at his heels. Wayne Maxwell took over 2nd, mid race and you could see GA settle in behind Wayne, comfortable he could hold off the attacking Jamie Stauffer. A couple of laps to go, GA pushed up onto the rear of Wayne’s Honda ready to pounce only to have a red flag call a premature end, leaving the team thinking of what could of been. 3 rd was an improvement, but what was better was the combination of Glenn and the S1000 was so much closer to being able to dominate again. GA 4th for the round 2 points off 2nd……… that’s how close it was.

Linden rode a great race challenging and passing quite a number of Superbikes to closely follow the hard charging Nick Waters into 2nd and 2nd overall for the round. Earning him some valuable points in the championship after his 1st and DNF at the 1st round.

RIDERS DISCOUNT VESRAH SUZUKI’S JAKE LEWIS GETS HIS FIRST AMA PRO ROAD RACING VICTORY AT THE BIG KAHUNA ATLANTA

San Diego, CA – The Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki team returned to action this weekend on the team’s Dunlop equipped Suzuki GSX-R 600s at the Big Kahuna Atlanta at Road Atlanta in Braselton, GA with the first practice sessions and Provisional Qualifying being held Friday and Final Qualifying and the first of the doubleheader races being held on Saturday.

In the SuperSport class Jake Lewis ran at the front during their first practice session staying within the top 6 and ending up 3rd. During Provisional Qualifying later at the end of Friday afternoon Jake was again up front in the top 3 and pulled out a last lap effort using a new Dunlop D211GPA rear tire of 1:30.681 which was good for 2nd place. With nobody able to go faster during Final Qualifying on Saturday morning Jake has a starting position on the front row in P2 for the SuperSport races.

In SuperSport race 1 Jake got away at the start and ran at the front for the entire race dicing for the lead and crossing the stripe in front for the majority of the 16-lap event. On the last lap Jake was held up just slightly by a lapped rider, losing touch and the draft, bringing home a podium finish with a strong 2nd place finish over 20 seconds clear from 3rd place. Jake now sits tied for 2nd place in the SuperSport East standings with the help of the bonus point for leading the most laps today and is only 2 points out of the championship lead.

Jake Lewis – Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki #85

“Today’s race was really good for me and the whole Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki team! Finishing second is not where I would have liked, but I’ll take a podium anyway. I felt like I ran a strong race and didn’t make any mistakes, which was good. The crew and I will make changes tonight and try for the win tomorrow.”

Jake Lewis, riding his Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki GSX-R 600, captured his first AMA Pro Road Racing victory of his career by winning the second race of the SuperSport class doubleheader during the Big Kahuna Atlanta at Road Atlanta in Braselton, GA. Today’s race started out the same as yesterdays with Jake breaking away at the front in a 2 man battle for the lead and leading across the stripe the majority of the time. A red flag on lap 13 ended the race early and Jake was leading on the last lap that all riders completed awarding him the victory. With the victory and leading the most laps Jake collected 31 points on the day which now gives him 82 points in the SuperSport East season championship point standings and a 15 point lead over 2nd place.

Jake Lewis – Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki #85

“It feels awesome to get my first AMA Pro win at what I consider my home track! The whole race I was up front and felt really comfortable. The changes the crew made last night on the Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki worked really well in the race. The trophy and especially the surfboard for being the overall Big Kahuna of the weekend were sweet! All of my hard work and the help of a ton of people paid off today! I cannot thank everyone who has helped me get my first win, it feels great!”

Breeann Poland – Team Manager Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki

“It is great that the Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki team was able to get a win in only the second round of the 2012 AMA Pro Road Racing season. I am so proud of Jake and his performance this weekend while being sick and under pressure. The Daytona SportBike class was not as kind to the team this weekend but Cory and Benny will rebound at the Great Clips West Coast Moto Jam at Infineon Raceway in 2 weeks. Overall the Big Kahuna Atlanta was successful for the team including Kyle Wyman’s podium finish and Taylor Knapp in National Guard Superbike.”

In the Daytona SportBike class during the first practice session Cory West ran up front and stayed in the top 5 for the entire session while teammate Benny Solis was just outside of the top 10. In Provisional Qualifying later in the afternoon Cory was 6th with Benny 12th. In Saturday mornings Final Qualifying both Benny and Cory were able to improve upon their times using fresh Dunlop D211GPA tires with Benny jumping to 6th place while Cory slid one spot to 7th despite his quicker lap time. The teammates will line up alongside each other in the middle of the second row for both GoPro Daytona SportBike races this weekend.

In the first Daytona SportBike race of the weekend both Benny and Cory started in the top 5 with Benny running second for the first half of the race. Both riders were able to stay near the front until the next to last lap when Benny suffered misfortune with a crash. Cory finished the race with a top 5 result in 5th place. Cory is now 7th in the Daytona SportBike season point standings.

Cory West – Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki #57

“I got a good start and found myself in fourth early in the race. The pace wasn’t too bad at the beginning but I could feel that I was bottoming the forks out under hard braking. I fell back some positions but was gifted them back after a few riders crashed and brought it home in 5th. I’m happy about scoring a top five but I know we can run the pace if we get the bike working a little better tomorrow. Big thanks to my crew chief Tony, mechanic Sean, and an awesome engine built by Mark Junge”

Benny Solis – Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki #35

“After having a tough 1st qualifying, we found a new and better setting for 2nd qualifying which put us in P6. Second row was great for me, I started out doing well in the race but unfortunately when we dropped the pace to some faster laps, and the front suspension wasn’t working like I needed it to. So I was struggling with the bike and I felt a little out of control trying to run a fast pace with so much chatter. I was trying everything I could to make it work but it was quite difficult for me. I ended up crashing out of 3rd but we now know we can run up front. Now we need to get the front end handling like we need it and we should do much better tomorrow.”

In the AMA Pro Road Racing GoPro Daytona SportBike class the team did not have the same find of fortunes with Cory West crashing out of the race in the early laps and Benny Solis running just inside the top 10 finishing in 9th place. Cory is now 10th in the GoPro Daytona SportBike season championship and Benny is in 18th place. The Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki team is in 6th place 2012 GoPro Daytona SportBike team point standings with 39 points

Benny Solis – Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki #35

“We didn’t finish the race like we wanted to but overall it was better than yesterday. I got some points and we know what sections we need to work on with the set up. I ended up 9th, I’m not stoked on that finish but I’m excited for our next race because I’m confident it will go much better, Infineon is a great track too so that makes it more exciting. Other than that I just have to say thanks to the Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki team. They ran a great program and my crew worked hard on getting me what I needed on the track.”

Cory West – Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki #57

“That’s definitely not how I wanted to end the weekend! I had a good morning warm-up and felt very confident in the changes that we made to the bike last night. My start wasn’t as good as yesterday and I ended up being stuck in the back of the front pack. I was riding pretty aggressive to make passes on the brakes so I could get away with the leaders and then ended up high siding coming out of turn 12. It was a weird crash because it happened so late in the drive but luckily it wasn’t very fast. I also want to thank my crew for giving me such a good bike this weekend and I’ll be ready for Infineon in two weeks’ time.”

Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki supported Kyle Wyman, in the AMA Pro Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 race, came back from a crash on the warm up lap, which necessitated starting at the rear of the field on his back-up bike at the restart, to finish on the podium in 3rd place. Kyle is now in 2nd place in the XR1200 Season championship 5 points out of the lead. Taylor Knapp, riding his Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki GSX-R 1000, in the AMA Pro Road Racing National Guard Superbike class was almost able to pull out a top 5 finish ending up 6th to complete the weekend for the team.

San Diego, CA – The Michael Jordan Motorsports (MJM) team celebrated a successful doubleheader weekend at Round Two of the 2012 AMA Pro National Guard Superbike series at Road Atlanta in Braselton, GA this weekend. National Guard Jordan Suzuki rider Roger Hayden carded two impressive top-five finishes, while MJM teammate Ben Bostrom picked up a solid top-10 result.

Hayden was the epitome of consistency at Road Atlanta. The Kentucky native shined during qualifying, coming in fourth and capturing a front-row grid position. Then, in both Saturday’s and Sunday’s races, Hayden battled for a podium position on his National Guard Jordan Suzuki GSX-R1000 before bringing home two fourth place results.

“Two fourths is a little disappointing after being on the podium twice at Daytona,” said Hayden. “At the same time, we made a run for the podium, we finished both races and we learned some stuff. Although fourth place isn’t where we want to be, I feel like I’m riding good and the National Guard Jordan Suzuki GSX-R1000 is working great. Hopefully, we can move on to Infineon and get back on the podium.”

MJM teammate Ben Bostrom also admitted to some disappointment this weekend, but still put in a commendable effort. In Saturday’s race, Bostrom gave 100 percent, getting a good start on his Jordan Suzuki GSX-R1000 and clicking off 20 smooth laps to finish eighth. On Sunday, Bostrom got another good start but suffered a get-off early in the race and was out for the day.

“It was really a tough weekend,” said Bostrom. “The Jordan Suzuki GSX-R1000 is a lot better than I’ve shown at the first few races. I’ve crashed out of three of four races and that’s unheard of. I usually don’t crash all year, so I’m not doing the bike any favors. I got eighth on Saturday and that’s top 10, but it’s not where I want to be. I’m definitely looking forward to racing at Infineon. I grew up in that area and I like the racetrack, and I think our bike will be racing for first there.”

In the 2012 AMA Pro National Guard Superbike Championship series rider points standings, Hayden is currently in third place and Bostrom is in 16th. The Michael Jordan Motorsports team’s next event of the 2012 AMA Pro National Guard Superbike Championship series is at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA, the weekend of May 4 – 6, 2012.

Celtic Racing’s Rispoli Wins First SuperSport Race At Road Atlanta After Dominating Practice And Qualifying, Starting From Pole!

San Diego, CA – James Rispoli rode his #1 plate Celtic Orient Express Racing Suzuki GSX-R 600 to victory in the first SuperSport race of the AMA Pro Big Kahuna Atlanta event on Saturday. Rispoli battled the entire length of the race with Jake Lewis, and was able to use skill and tactics to take advantage of late race traffic to secure the lead and race win. James dominated practice and qualifying approaching Saturday’s race, and was on Pole position for the start of the race with teammate Corey Alexander next to him on the grid in fifth position aboard the #5 National Guard Fairhills Group Suzuki GSX-R 600. Rispoli maintains his lead in the AMA SuperSport West championship and overall standings, while Alexander see his lead in the AMA SuperSport East standings narrowed down, he remains on top as we head into Sunday’s race.

“I’m really happy with this second win, and excited to do it again on Sunday. It was a tough race, and we were lucky to be able to work around the lapper – I stuck it in and was able to make a bit of a gap to Jake. My Celtic Orient Express Racing GSX-R 600 is working amazing.”

Alexander is preparing for Sunday’s race saying “I didn’t get a great start, and then struggled to move through traffic on Saturday, Road Atlanta doesn’t make passing easy, and I tried to ride a smart race and get as many points as possible. I’m happy to hold onto the SuperSport East lead, and I’m working with my crew to get a better start on Sunday.

James Rispoli rode his Celtic – Orient Express Racing #1 Suzuki GSX-R 600 to finish in second place in Sunday’s AMA Pro SuperSport race two. Road Atlanta marks two podium finishes and a pole position for Rispoli, in what must be described as a strong weekend despite a red flag that cut short Sunday’s SuperSport race. In a repeat of Saturday’s race one, Rispoli led the large SuperSport field and exchanged the lead repeatedly around the Road Atlanta circuit with the eventual race winner Jake Lewis. The 2012 season now moves west where Rispoli will be able to earn points towards the 2012 AMA Pro SuperSport West championship, and a defense of his 2011 title.

National Guard Fairhills Group #5 Suzuki GSX-R 600 rider Corey Alexander’s race ended early on Sunday, when he went down on lap two in the race after getting tangled up with another rider. Alexander suffered some injuries to his left shoulder and has some pain, but has good motion at this stage. With time before the next race in two weeks, everyone remains confident that Alexander will heal quickly and settle back into the front of the SuperSport field where he was at the season opening event at Daytona a month ago.

Enthusiasm cannot be tempered by a red flag for Rispoli, he stated “I really had a fun race two battling with Jake. The team did a great job getting me back out there on a new motorcycle after a warm up incident. The #1 Celtic – Orient Express Racing bike was really good, I had just a couple moments during the race but was able to ride a comfortable fast pace. I had just passed for the lead and set my personal fast lap before the red flag came out! Many thanks to my team and crew for doing such a great job all weekend so I could be on the podium twice!”

Corey Alexander is already looking ahead to round three at Infineon and said that “Overall this weekend was not what I hoped for. My crew Barry, Mike, and Tim all worked hard to give me a great bike. I felt like we finally got the National Guard Fairhills Group Celtic Racing GSX-R 600 dialed in for Sunday, but got the short end of the stick after a bad start. Hopefully everything checks out and we will be at Infineon.”

Moss on the Box in Coonabarabran MX National Rnd 2

San Diego, CA – After securing a fourth place finish at the opening round at Conondale, Moss set his sights on and even better performance at the Goanna Tracks venue and was looking strong to secure the second round overall win after two great moto wins aboard his Campbell Mining, Troy Lee Designs, Maxima Racing Honda in the morning’s back to back races. Though suffering from a few nerves Moss was able to hold strong in the shorter five lap opening race and secured the teams first moto win of the season.

“In the first moto I didn’t actually get that good of a start, I was able to push up the inside of everyone and make my way through quickly” explained Moss.

I was actually quite nervous at the start while I was out front” stated Moss “I was a little unsure of what lines to take and rode a little tight. It was enough to get that win though, it was only a five lap race because the Coonabarabran track is so long.”

The second moto was just as successful for Jake as he once again got out front early, and rode away for his second straight win.

“I felt faster in the second race, once the nerves had settled” the Moss institute rider added.

Things were looking good heading into the final moto, however disaster struck on the opening lap when Moss tangled with other competitors in the opening few corners leaving him on the ground and scrambling to save the day. At one stage it looked like things were back on track but another fall late in the race left the Nerriga rider in 17th position at race end, though it was enough to secure third place for the round.

“The last race was not so good, I got tangled up with some riders at the start of the race causing me to crash and putting me at the back of the field. I was then able to charge through to about 9th position” Moss explained .

“Late in the race I made a few more mistakes, with a small tuck of the front end and missing some gear changes, but overall it was a big step in the right direction and third overall for the day is good for my Campbell Mining, Troy Lee Designs, Maxima Racing Honda team” he concluded.

Jake will now set his sights on racing the Coolum round in the Sunny state title in Queensland this coming weekend before making his way to Wonthaggi for the next round of the National series.

Monster Energy Kawasaki/Maxima’s Villopoto and Durham Dominate in New Orleans

San Diego, CA – Maxima Racing Oils and Kawasaki celebrated on the balconies overlooking Bourbon Street in New Orleans, La., Saturday night after Ryan Villopoto captured his ninth win of the season and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki/Maxima’s Darryn Durham won his first Supercross Lites main event at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Close behind Durham was teammate Blake Baggett who had to work his way to the front of the pack to finish second. In the Supercross class, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki/Maxima’s Broc Tickle came together with another rider on lap two dropping him outside the top-15, but was able to climb back up to 10th. Monster Energy Kawasaki/Maxima’s Jake Weimer was forced to pull out of the main event following a first lap crash.

Long Overdue

Durham has had the speed all season, but had yet to put 15 laps together perfectly. In the lites main, he did not get the greatest jump out of the gate, rounding the first turn in sixth, but two corners later he had snuck into second. He quickly overtook the leader and never looked back, taking his first Supercross Lites victory. The win jumps Durham back up to second in points with one round remaining.

“My night actually didn’t start that good, but it ended awesome!” said Durham. “I didn’t feel that good in practice and my heat race was okay. In the main event I kept it on around the first turn and swooped by a few guys, got into the lead and took it home. It hasn’t really sunk in yet, but I’m so pumped to finally get one. I hadn’t even ridden supercross since Houston so maybe I should have been riding more outdoors! This is huge for me and I’m pumped to be able to do it for the team.”

Keep Them Coming

Although Villopoto wrapped up the championship two weeks ago, his approach to the races hasn’t changed. Villopoto’s night was close to flawless as he was fastest in qualifying practice, won his heat race, ripped the holeshot in the main on his KX450F and went on to lead every lap. Villopoto’s calculated precision on the track is unmatched by anyone else in the field, which he proves week after week.

“It’s great to get my ninth win tonight,” said Villopoto. “I felt strong in practice and really put down 20 solid laps in the main event, so I’m really happy with the night. The track was really tough so it kept you on your toes. The focus is changing towards outdoors now, but if a win presents itself like it did tonight, we’ll take it.”

Coming Up Short

Baggett is known for never showing his true speed in qualifying practice, so it is often difficult to judge how he feels on track until the main event. He qualified fifth and ran a solid heat race finishing third. In the main event, he got off the gate in a decent spot and came around the first turn in the top-five. By the halfway point, Baggett had moved into second behind Durham and was looking to make a move. Not wanting to make an overly-aggressive pass on his teammate he would settle for second place. Baggett admits he never fully felt comfortable on the New Orleans dirt, but one would never know it based on his result.

“I rode the best I could tonight, but it wasn’t quite enough,” said Baggett. “I really didn’t like the track and dirt since first practice this morning, it didn’t suit me. I was able to make some passes and move through the field and I made the best of it. I’ve still got some things to dial in, so I plan to come out in Vegas and get a win before the season is through.”

Within Reach

As the momentum continues to build for Tickle towards the end of the season, the Superdome looked like the venue where he could grab his first top-five finish in the Supercross class. Tickle rode an exceptionally strong heat race holding third for much of the race before finishing fourth and putting himself in a good position for the main event. When the gate dropped for the 20-lap main, Tickle jumped out to sixth on lap-one and had the leaders in sight. One lap later he got the worst of a run-in with another rider where Tickle hit the ground and dropped back to 16th. Determined to finish where he belongs, Tickle battled back towards the front and was able to salvage 10th. With that finish, Tickle moves into the top-10 in points and continues to set his eyes on the front.

“I’m really happy with the way I rode tonight,” said Tickle. “I got a good start and was near the top-five before coming together with another guy and going down. I was able to come back to 10th, which is where I have finished without a crash so I’m happy to get those points. With the field thinning out, I should be closer to the front so I’m looking forward to next weekend.”

Soldiering On

Racing is very unpredictable and one small error can end a rider’s night. In qualifying practice, Weimer looked smooth and controlled and laid down the second fastest lap time behind Villopoto. With Monster Energy Kawasaki qualifying 1-2 for the night program, everyone was anticipating a great result. In his heat race he got out front and easily took his second heat race win of the season, boosting his confidence for the main event. When the gate dropped for the main, Weimer put himself right where he needed to be, rounding the first few corners in third until a bobble on the face of the triple sent him off the track and down onto the concrete. Weimer attempted to continue racing, but decided it was not worth the risk of continuing.

“It’s a disappointing end to a good day,” said Weimer. “Today I was riding the way I know how and was able to transition the work I put in during the week, into the weekend. It was a small mistake on the triple that sent me off the track, but that small mistake cost me huge. I got going again, but just about threw it away a few more times and decided it was the best decision to pull off. Next week we’ll start fresh and hopefully end the night on the box.”

Seashells

The dirt inside the Superdome was unique. At first glance one may think it was littered with pebbles and rocks, but at close inspection the dirt was actually full of seashells. This created a dilemma amongst many riders to sport additional roost protection such as hand guards or chest protectors. After a few practice sessions it was obvious the roost was not that dangerous, but never the less a little harder than average.

The Pacific Northwest

Monster Energy AMA Supercross heads back to the West coast next Saturday, April 21, 2012 to Centurylink Field in Seattle, Wash., for Round 15 of the series. The open stadium in Seattle allows weather to play a factor in the racing. The Supercross Lites Western Region riders will return to do battle where Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki/Maxima’s Dean Wilson currently holds the points lead by two points. Wilson will be looking to extend his points lead and provide himself with some breathing room as the season concludes.
